Welcome to an exciting new year. It is so GREAT to see all of the students back and excited about learning.
We are also working on building our stamina for reading independently in class each day. The students have a HUGE amount of new books to choose from, but these books must stay in the classroom. I have a separate library, and of course the school library, from which students may check out books to take home and enjoy. All students will soon identified as being at a reading level that will challenge them and grow them as readers. They should be choosing books from these colored bins to keep in their reading bags.
Students should also be reading at home in books of their choice. Homework each day for my class is to read for 30 minutes. Parents/guardians, the students should be sharing a reading log with you to sign, showing that you witnessed the child read for 30 minutes each day at home. This reading log is collected each Friday, and a grade is given for completion/non-completion of their homework.
I stay after school for thirty minutes each Tuesday and Thursday for any student that would like tutoring, needs to get their reading steps in, or needs to make up work missed due to an absence. They must have transportation home.
Homework is any work that the students did not have enough time to complete in class AND to read independently, in a book of their choice, for 30 minutes or more.
